and both of them come with 50 mm speaker on each earphone, so basically in term of audio technology, these two gaming headsets are pretty much the same, but the big difference between these headsets Turtle Beach Ear Force XP400 and Turtle Beach Ear Force X42 is battery ! While Turtle Beach Ear Force XP400 offers a built-in rechargeable battery with 15 hours of gaming per one charge and you can charge while you play, with Turtle Beach Ear Force X42, you have to use 2 AAA rechargeable batteries, this could considered convenience or inconvenience depends on your preference, if you don’t mind to buy rechargeable batteries and take them out your headset once a while to charge, then you can save your 40 USD for something more important or you may consider to replace batteries with a new ones all the time, it is cheap. X42 comes with bigger speakers than X41, so you can get a full fidelity sound, 4. you can remove a mic boom, I love this feature since I never use this function for online multiplayer and you can also hear your voice from your headset and this is good so you will be able to see if you shout too loud ! and also it comes with Chat Boost that cut a background noise from your voice, 4. Ear Force X42 also comes with a new preset equalizer, so you can personally adjust every tone into what you are really like such as Bass Boost, Treble Boost or you can boost both frequencies, and 5. Ear Force X42 comes with many preset positions for speakers angle positions.
And that’s my point, Ear Force X42 is a Dolby headset but it is not a true surround that comes with 4-5 speakers on each phone, it is a virtual surround that comes with only one speaker on each phone but separates channel by a Dolby decoder, the plus for this virtual surround technology is you’ll get a lighter and cheaper headset and also a longer battery life, but what you’ll lose is a sound precision, if you only use Ear Force X42 for gaming, I don’t think it will be a problem, but if this headset will be your one and only for movie watching and music listening as well, I think you may want to check out a true surround headset instead of a virtual ones.

From my experience, if you play FPS like Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Battlefield, tactic TPS like Ghost Recon : Future Soldier, or TPS like Max Payne, it is very hard to tell a direction of enemies’ gunfires (this happened with Resistance Burning Skies as well, I cannot tell where are enemies due to its stereo audio system), and also due to the released of Amazon Instant Video, and many internet streaming apps on XBOX 360, I think add a little more money to gain a Dolby headset is a better idea, you can enjoy a surround audio system from movies as well as gaming, I think it is a good investment. So I think Ear Force X42 is a better choice than X32 but keep in mind that this Turtle Beach Ear Force X42 is a virtual surround – not a true surround headset, if you want to buy a true surround you may want to check out a difference between virtual surround and true surround here.

In my opinion, a dolby headset is obviously a better choice for gaming and movie watching. If you use your XBOX 360 as your entertainment unit as well, I think you might love to watch your DVD movie with 5.1 channel headphone, and for gaming, 5.1 improves your gaming experience by create a real-life environment sound. So if possible, I think Turtle Beach Ear Force X42 is a better choice for gaming headset, but if around 150 USD is over your budget, I think you may want to check out Ear Force X41, it is cheaper and one of the best customer review headset for XBOX 360.
