If you are looking for something cheaper but still comes with a great quality, you may want to try Razer Megalodon, it is around 40 USD cheaper, but don’t forget that Razer Megalodon is not a true 7.1 headset.

Beside of its downsides such as no optical out, no virtual surround (my AVR can decode that), and auto shutdown is too sensitive (I don’t know what to do with this, it could be an annoying problem, but I have a willing to try), here is a plus side of this headphones, I have researched :

1. Sennheiser RS 180 is a good audio quality headphones, I am not a big fan of a dark tone headphones but for a movie watching and gaming as priorities, I think a dark tone headphones could be a very good headphones, I don’t want to hear a disturbing high tone of broken glasses, or booming.

2. Sennheiser RS 180′s RF stand could be use with many headphones, so it means that, in a future, when I move in to my new condo, I can buy another pair of Sennheiser RS series for my girlfriend without any new pair of headphones buying, just an addition headphones (we don’t want to cause a problem with our neighbors), and I think this is very convenience.

3. For PS3 gaming, I know that the price of Sennheiser RS 180, I can buy a good new true 5.1 gaming headset, but I already have an AVR that can simulate a surround sound for any headphones and I don’t want to waste my money on a new decoder for headset that comes in a pack, and also I believe, using a audio headphones for gaming will give you a better audio quality. And I never use a voice chat since I am not a native english speaker and my internet connect cannot handle a NAT type that allow voice chat.

I’ve a PS3 Sony official gaming headset, and I have to say, it works pretty well but its audio quality is intolerant, its hi-tone is too high but for the price under 100 USD, I think it is acceptable.

My update on PS3 Sony gaming headset review

It has been almost 8 months since I’ve bought this gaming headset, if you want to read my first impression no this PS3′s official gaming headset, you can read it here. Why I want to do an update review about this gaming headed, I think reached a point that I get used to this gaming headset and I have used all of its features and this is what I think about this gaming headset :

Wireless Stereo Headset

1. I have a problem with its volume control, I think it is too loud even with almost lowest volume adjustment, and I can’t do anything about it.

2. In term of audio character, I think it is too bright, but not as bright as “it could destroy your pleasant moments” it is ok for a gaming headset under 100 USD ! But if possible, it would be better if this headset comes with equalizer or even firmware update for equalizer.

3. For music listening, as you know this is not a wireless headset for music listening, it is acceptable for movies and games (I use it when I want to do a late night Netflix or when that movie comes with no subtitle or late night gaming), but for music listening, I think it is too blurry, you will enjoy a wide sound stage, but it lacks of a good focus, and I think a virtual surround for movie watching does not work at all !

If possible you should go with something serious like a true 5.1 gaming headset that could cost you around 200 – 300 USD, but if you are in a budget control like me, I think PS3 gaming headset  is an acceptable choice, if you don’t use it as your primary sound system.

X42 comes with  bigger speakers than X41, so you can get a full fidelity sound, 4. you can remove a mic boom, I love this feature since I never use this function for online multiplayer and you can also hear your voice from your headset and this is good so you will be able to see if you shout too loud ! and also it comes with Chat Boost that cut a background noise from your voice, 4. Ear Force X42 also comes with a new preset equalizer, so you can personally adjust every tone into what you are really like such as Bass Boost, Treble Boost or you can boost both frequencies, and 5. Ear Force X42 comes with many preset positions for speakers angle positions.

And that’s my point, Ear Force X42 is a Dolby headset but it is not a true surround that comes with 4-5 speakers on each phone, it is a virtual surround that comes with only one speaker on each phone but separates channel by a Dolby decoder, the plus for this virtual surround technology is you’ll get a lighter and cheaper headset and also a longer battery life, but what you’ll lose is a sound precision, if you only use Ear Force X42 for gaming, I don’t think it will be a problem, but if this headset will be your one and only for movie watching and music listening as well, I think you may want to check out a true surround headset instead of a virtual ones.
